Everything in this car that makes noise, lights up, or moves draws power. That means before a single speaker plays or a single display lights up, the electrical system has to be right. Not adequate. Right.
The stock alternator on a 1990 Firebird was built to run a stock Firebird. That's a different machine than this one. The moment you add three amplifiers, a DSP chain, a VCR, custom dash electronics, and a full lighting and display system, the factory charging circuit becomes the weakest link in the build. So instead of replacing it, the solution was simpler and more capable: add to it.
The stock alternator stays. Alongside it runs a Mass Engineering 200-amp unit with an external rectifier — a second alternator added to the system, not a substitute for the first. Moving the rectifier outside the alternator body means it can deliver its full rated output consistently without throttling itself to manage heat. Two hundred additional amps on top of the factory charging system gives this build the headroom it needs to perform without the voltage sag that compresses dynamics and starves amplifiers under load.
Getting a second alternator into the serpentine path on an F-body required custom fabrication. Nothing from the factory accounts for a second unit. Custom brackets were designed and built to position the Mass Engineering alternator correctly in the belt path, under proper tension, with correct alignment — running in parallel with the stock unit rather than fighting it. It's not a bolt-in. It never is at this level.
The audio system runs on its own dedicated AGM battery — completely separate from the vehicle's starting battery. AGM chemistry holds voltage under sustained load better than flooded lead-acid, and it doesn't off-gas, which matters in an enclosed cabin. The audio system draws from this battery. The car starts from the other one. The combined alternator output charges both. They do not share a ground.
That last point is the one most builds get wrong. Complete ground isolation between the two systems means there is no shared ground path between the vehicle electrical system and the audio system. Ground loops are the leading cause of noise in car audio installations — alternator whine, ignition interference, ticking that follows engine RPM. The fix isn't filtering or capacitors. The fix is isolation, done at the design stage, before a single wire is run.
Power delivery from the dual alternator system and dedicated battery to the audio chain runs in 1/0 gauge wire to gold-plated distribution blocks — Streetwires units chosen for their build quality and connection integrity. 1/0 is the trunk line. From the distribution blocks, 8-gauge wire sub-routes to each amplifier. The trunk carries everything; the branches carry what each amp needs. That's how you keep voltage consistent across a multi-amp system.
Every connection in this system is crimped and soldered. Crimped because a proper crimp is a gas-tight mechanical connection that won't loosen. Soldered because solder fills the void and eliminates resistance at the joint. Both, because one is a backup for the other and neither alone is as good as both together. All ring terminals. No butt splices in the power path.

The electrical system is the one part of the build nobody sees. It lives under the carpet, behind the panels, inside the trunk. But every other chapter in this build — the sound system, the media devices, the dash electronics — runs on what this chapter built. Get this wrong and everything downstream suffers. Get it right and you never think about it again.
